This South African Penguin was proud of himself as he came waddling up from a successful fishing trip in the Indian Ocean. Only about 16”-18” tall, these penguins are unique in many ways. Their most notable feature is that they bray like a donkey giving them the nick name, Jack Ass Penguins. They are also in a warmer climate than most penguins but they don't seem to mind. The colony of about 3000 penguins live on the south western shore of the Cape Peninsula and are indigenous to South Africa. Patient, curious and very relaxed, these penguins are used to human onlookers and don’t seem to mind their presence. Nesting in the sand or in the sandy dirt under low foliage, the penguins are vigilant and attentive parents. The fuzzy chicks look totally dazed by their surroundings and don’t stray too far from nest until they are ready to meet the world.
