"Indian Paintbrush & Sandstone" - Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona
I discovered this nice close-up on my first visit to the Coyote Buttes in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument of Northern Arizona. The Coyote Buttes are a spectacular group of sandstone formations that are most famous for "The Wave" and "
The Wave 2
." I hiked the four miles to "The Wave" in the darkness of early morning in hopes of capturing some nice "golden light" images. A short time later it suddenly dawned on me that I had about 12 hours to wait for the late afternoon "golden light"... this leaves you a lot of time for deep inner thought and consuming all of your water supply by about 2 in the afternoon! It also gave me lots of time to explore the area around the buttes. As I was exploring, I noticed a large patch of red high up on one of the sandstone formations. I honestly couldn't identify what it was, but the red color was absolutely brilliant. I scrambled the 75 yards up to the mystery object and as I got closer I realized it was a grouping of my favorite wildflower from Mount Rainier National Park, the Indian Paintbrush. It was very strange to see this lush wildflower flourishing in such a dry and desolate environment... but made for a wonderful image.
Signed, Limited Edition of 500 Color Prints.
