"Ethereal Tones/ High Dune" - Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

Located on the western edge of Colorado's Rocky Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park consist of a huge dune field which covers 39 square miles and contains the tallest sand dunes in North America.  The tallest of these is "High Dune" which rises almost 750 above the San Luis Valley floor.  The dunes have been built over thousands of years as the strong western winds have deposited huge amounts of sand at the base of the 14,000 foot Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
I captured this image in October of 1999 with my 250mm telephoto lens, which allowed me to contrast the high desert terrain with the "other worldly" tones of High Dune bathed in the late afternoon sun.
