These large, boldly colored birds have long, flattened bills which they use to open shellfish. They practice two shell-opening techniques, stabbing when the shell opens or hammering the closed shell to shatter it. This pair was photographed in the ocean just off the beach on Botany Bay Plantation, Edisto Island, SC.
